Table View High School

Table View High School is actually a young school compared to several of the neighbouring educational facilities inside the Western Cape and even in South Africa. Despite the fact that the facility has only been in existence for twenty six years, it’s excelled in several spheres.

Table View High SchoolTable View High School offers a broad academic programme to its senior pupils where they are given the opportunity to advance and excel. Learners wanting to select subjects that aren’t part of the curriculum are permitted to register for added subjects that count toward their final assessment. We are proud of the facility’s academic record over the years.

Along with the wide academic spectrum, Table View High School also has an extensive array of sporting and cultural activities to select from. Students are encouraged to take part in all fields and, as the website is upgraded, their achievements will be posted and updated on a regular basis.

Our school is primarily an academic institution but does present Hospitality Studies, Computer Studies, Visual Art and Design.

History:

On 21 January 1986, the start of a brand new school year, 357 Std 6 & 7 learners in addition the Headmaster, 18 teachers and the secretary walked through the doors of Table View High School.

During 1989 we had our first group of Std 10’s – which meant we were able to choose a Prefect Body.  We elected 17 prefects with Sally O’Shea and Bradley Wade as the 1st head girl and head boy of this school.

At this time there are, besides the Headmaster, 2 Deputies, 47 educators, 4 admin ladies and in excess of 1000 learners.  Let’s not forget there is also an Estate Manager, 8 maintenance staff plus a Sports Administrator.

Table View High School was at first designed for 750 students but things were becoming a bit squashed so the Education Department gave us a few Prefabricated Classes.  In spite of regular upkeep and care, these Prefabs did not stand the test of time, so seven years ago, at great expense, we developed 4 additional classrooms along with rest room facilities as well as lodging to house an Estate Manager.  The design and colour of this recent extension is architecturally consistent with the current building.

In addition the buildings, our various sports fields grew in leaps and bounds, catering for rugby, hockey, soccer, tennis, netball etc.  We even laid a mini Astro Turf four years ago.

Later on, we developed a remarkable multi-purpose centre on top of the new classrooms.   This building serves as a lecture/exam room (accommodating roughly 130 students at a time) and recreational space.  It’s regularly hired out for private functions thus generating money for the facility.

Since 1989 (the year of the initial group of Grade 12’s) Table View High School has had 3853 Grade 12’s tread the hallowed halls and sit their final exams.  Although I regret to mention that not all were victorious, we have had an outstanding pass rate.  Over the previous eleven years, we achieved a 100% pass rate in 9 out of the eleven years.  That is definitely no mean feat.

As part of our vision, we’d like to “produce” young people with qualities that include, amongst others, ethical principles, respect for all persons as well as nature.  All of this whilst at the same time educators pass on knowledge.

Our philosophy is that as a child-centred institution we aspire to provide each student with the basic skill-sets they will need to succeed in adult living, specifically the skill to make well thought-out judgements as well as the courage to accept the consequences.

Additionally, our goal is to develop a clear awareness of the pupil’s individual strengths and shortcomings, develop skills of application, group interaction and a respect for persons who differ in culture and ability.

Parklands School: CBC St John’s Parklands

This Parklands school is a part of a network of Christian Brothers’ schools around the globe. The others being CBC Kimberley (St Patrick’s), Bloemfontein (St Joseph’s), Boksburg (St Thomas Aquinas) and Pretoria (Mount Edmund).

These educational facilities were started by the Christian Brothers who came out from Ireland during the previous century. Even though not many brothers are concerned with the organization of the schools presently, the tradition is still centred on the work of our founder Edmund Ignatius Rice.

CBC St John’s, Parklands, understands there is so much more to educating the child than filling his head with facts. At this Parklands school, they aim to ‘nourish’ the youngster first, which means that before educating pupils, they attempt to understand them first.

The setting at CBC St John’s is a relaxed, but disciplined focus on academics, spirituality, culture, sport and outreach. The holistic slant to their instruction ensures that there are possibilities for each child to shine in the field of her talent at this Parklands school.

CBC St John’s, Parklands, understands there is so much more to educating the child than filling his head with facts. At this Parklands school, they aim to ‘nourish’ the youngster firstThis Parklands school promotes leadership in all elements of school life and expects students to share their talents, in the spirit of servant leadership. It is essential that students recognise that they’re a part of a broader community. As future leaders of South Africa, they should be aware of the world around them, the needs of the immediate community and their task in altering society.

History:

By late 1999 it had become apparent that CBC St John’s in Green Point had reached a crossroads. Pupil enrolment was declining and it was evident it had outlived its vision and sanction to the local community. By 2001, the Board of Governors took the bold step of relocating St John’s to Parklands. The Green Point facility shut its doors in December 2001, having served the Green Point community for 67 years. Plans were drawn up and the building of the Parklands facility started in February 2002.

By October 2002, only 60 students had enrolled in the new school, but by January 2003, CBC St John’s Parklands opened its doors with 236 students and 23 staff members, regardless of having faced many challenges and a lot of resistance to the launching of the new school.

CBC St John’s, Parklands offers a:

  1. Senior School

  2. Primary School

  3. Pre-Primary

The pre-primary school has 9 classes which are divided into the three year groups -the Grade 00 group, Grade 0 group and Grade R group. This Parklands school has a professional and experienced Educator in every classroom who is helped by a capable Assistant.

The existing structure was specifically designed with little people in mind. The classrooms are light and bright; while simultaneously having just the ideal amount of home comfort for your young child to feel secure and special. Playing is the most important element of the curriculum and it’s up to the educator to manipulate the Learning Areas so that youngsters choose to play and learn what is necessary.

At this Parklands school, all the children are meticulously assessed every month and their individual development is monitored closely. They have Occupational Therapists working in their facility as well as a Child Psychologist, plus a Speech Therapist that visits 3 times weekly to assist any pupils with Language or Speech challenges.

The amazing outside playground of this Parklands school contains plenty of options for youngsters and each Grade has its own, individual play-section. A vital characteristic of their Pre-Primary, and what makes them stand out from their peers, is the importance they place on developing the Spiritual side of their pupils.

A Fast-Growing Blouberg School!

Blouberg School: West Riding Primary SchoolWest Riding Primary School was originally established in Table View in 2008 in temporary prefabricated classrooms. This Blouberg school started offering only foundation phase classes but then moved to its permanent home in 2009. By 2011 it already included grade 6 pupils and today has a learner enrolment number of 736.

Learners at the school are from a multi-cultural community and are also mainly from single parent and/or single income home, therefore, extra funding from parents is something they cannot rely on. In an attempt to introduce technology to the school, they managed to purchase a few second hand computers from a nearby high school and the Western Cape Education Department has also recently provided administrative computers.

In 2011, they launched the Khanya Project that will see their dream of a technology integrated curriculum become a reality, allowing learners regular, structured access to computers with software to boost their numeracy and literacy levels. Internet access also allows learners to have access to up-to-date, relevant information to help them with real life learning and current affairs.

Blouberg School: West Riding Primary SchoolNot only are the educators at West Riding Primary School helping to develop learners understanding of the technology that influences all aspects of our lives, they are also fully aware of how learners are better able to learn with a full tummy.

As many of their learners are from a low socio-economic background, the payment of school fees is irregular at best, yet they also feel compelled to provide breakfast, lunch and even food parcels for many of the learners.

For more information on this wonderful Blouberg school with a heart situated in Circle Road in Table View, call (021) 556 3330.
